Crazy Nanny's

Crazy Nanny’s was a lesbian bar in New York City that ran from 1991-2004. Located on 21 7th Ave, the bar spanned two floors allowing for large events. Crazy Nanny's drew a racially diverse crowd and was a space for the larger LGBT community to gather together.

Cubbyhole Bar

The bar now known as Cubbyhole dates back to 1987 when it was owned and operated by Tanya Saunders and Debbie Fierro as a refuge for all comers under the name DT's Fat Cat. It has remained both a lesbian and queer friendly location throughout its history as bar patronage shifted throughout New York City's LGBTQ+ community. In 1994 Saunders bought the name Cubbyhole from the owner of an already-closed lesbian bar, and the bar has operated under that name since.It is owned and operated by Lisa Menichino who had been a bar-tender under Saunders' ownership. Cubbyhole is at 281 W. 12th Street, the same location where Saunders operated DT's Fat Cat. The former Cubby Hole was located in what is now Henrietta Hudson. While there was some concern in early 2022 when the bar closed for renovation, it reopened in spring.

Sara Cushing was a Washington, DC-based artist who exhibited work across the US and abroad. A lifelong learner, Sara studied art at the Atlanta School of Art, Parsons, and the Corcoran School, developing a practice that included handmade paper, artists’ books, photographs, and animated films. In 1983, Sara was awarded a residency at WSW to produce her artist’s book Interlude, and in 1993, she returned to print Talismans. As an educator, Sara taught art at Mount Vernon College, the Corcoran School of Art, Marymount College, and Georgetown University.

Mary Teresa Slaney is a retired American middle-distance runner. During her career, she won gold medals in the 1500 meters and 3000 meters at the 1983 World Championships, and was the world record holder in the mile, 5000 meters and 10,000 meters. In total, she set 17 official and unofficial world records, including being the first woman in history to break 4:20 for the mile. She also set 36 US national records at distances ranging from 800 meters to 10,000 meters, and has held the US record in the mile, 2000 meters and 3000 meters since the early 1980s, while her 1500 meters record stood for 32 years. Stormé DeLarverie (December 24, 1920 – May 24, 2014) was an American woman known as the butch lesbian whose scuffle with police was, according to Stormé and many eyewitnesses, the spark that ignited the Stonewall uprising, spurring the crowd to action. She was born in New Orleans, to an African American mother and a white father. She is remembered as a gay civil rights icon and entertainer, who performed and hosted at the Apollo Theater and Radio City Music Hall. She worked for much of her life as an MC, singer, bouncer, bodyguard, and volunteer street patrol worker, the "guardian of lesbians in the Village."
