TFI Teaches — Memory Lab at Pen and Brush
12:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Pen and Brush
29 E 22nd St
New York, NY 10010
As a part of our TFI Teaches education program, The Feminist Institute is thrilled to present a pop-up Memory Lab at Pen and Brush between June 15 and July 15, 2023. Appointments are available between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The Memory Lab aligns with our primary goal to increase access to feminist materials and empower individuals to preserve their analog and digital legacies by offering our archival services to the public.
Participants can schedule 60-minute archival consultations with TFI staff at the memory lab and digitize materials. Participants will receive both the original and copy of their files. If both parties are interested, one or more items will be selected to be presented on The Feminist Institute website, with the copyright staying with the artist.
Supported media types include VHS tapes, Hi8 tapes, miniDV tapes, audiocassettes, optical media (CD-R/DVD-R), 3.5" floppy disks, websites, 35mm negatives, medium format negatives, 4″ x 5″ negatives, photographs up to 11″ x 17″, documents up to 11″ x 17″, and slide photographs.
Any formats not listed here cannot be digitized on-site, though we are happy to recommend the next steps for any unsupported formats.
Our event opens on June 15 with an event at Pen and Brush; archival consultations start on June 16. We are also hosting workshops on personal digital archiving, ethical digitization considerations, and feminist legacy planning.
