Jezebel and the Case of Disappearing Feminist Digital Media

The recent announcement of the feminist blog Jezebel’s shutter by G/O Media—and subsequent purchase by Paste Magazine—leads to various digital preservation-related questions. In the face of shifting forms and funding models for digital media, how can we ensure that the significant properties of born-digital feminist media remain intact and accessible over time?

Preserving the International Museum of Women

The Feminist Institute worked closely with Global Fund for Women to address feminist digital preservation with an initiative to preserve and document the work of the International Museum of Women (IMOW), an innovative digital museum with a mission to inspire creativity, awareness, and action on vital global gender justice issues. In this project feature, we’ll discuss our approach to capturing this born-digital resource and considerations to take when preserving digital projects that have reached obsolescence.

The Evolution of the International Museum of Women

Feminists have been utilizing the Internet to build innovative digital spaces and communities since the mid-1990s. These projects are critical to understanding the evolution of feminist movements and have served as essential documentation of gender and racial injustice worldwide. As technology evolves, web standards change, and social media platforms dissipate, what does it take to preserve intersectional feminist digital initiatives and social media over time?

TFI Teaches — Digitizing Videotapes

For many years, audiovisual archivists have been ringing the alarm about the magnetic media crisis and the potential loss of valuable historical documentation held on obsolete media formats. This includes personal home movies filmed on the first widely available camcorders from the 1980s and 1990s, meaning even tapes stored in the most environmentally ideal conditions will become unwatchable in the coming years.
